If you’ve ever thought, “I just hope my kids cooperate for photos…” you’re definitely not alone.
Most families we work with feel that way going in. And honestly, it seems like the more you want it to be perfect, the crazier the kids start acting. The truth is, the best sessions don’t come from perfectly posed moments. They come from just being together.
The way your kids run back to you. The way you laugh at something small. The moments you didn’t plan.
That’s what we’re actually trying to capture. We document your family in a way that feels natural, relaxed, and true to who you are.

It’s not about getting everything “right.”
It’s about:
We’ll guide you, but we’re mostly watching for the real stuff. The little interactions that usually go unnoticed but end up meaning the most later.

You’re not going to show up and be put into a bunch of stiff poses. Your kids aren’t expected to sit still and smile on command.
(We may grab one quick smiling group photo, but we keep it fast and even make that part fun.)
We’ll give some direction, but a lot of the session is just:
That’s where the best moments come from.

When kids are prepped too much ahead of time, or when there are a lot of bribes involved, they can feel pressure, and usually, it backfires. Kids can tell when something feels like a performance.
Instead of building it up, just say something like: “We’re going to go hang out and take some photos.”
Make it sound like any other fun outing, because we plan on having a blast!

When the session feels like something your kids would already enjoy doing, everything changes.
We can keep it simple or get creative with it.
You could:
If your kids love:
we lean into that.
They don’t need to act different. They just get to be themselves.

Where you go matters, mostly because of how it allows your kids to move and interact.
Some of our go-to spots:
Open space, great light, and room for kids to just be kids
Perfect for playful, relaxed sessions
Easy, natural, and great for exploring
Especially good for younger kids
Super personal and calm
Some of the most meaningful photos happen right at home
Cleaner, more editorial feel
Great if you want something a little different

What usually works best:
Try to avoid:
If you feel comfortable, it shows in the photos.

The best light is:
Each season has its own feel:

Right now, it might just feel like another thing to fit into your busy life.
But before you know it, years go by. And these photos become one of the only ways to go back and remember what this season actually felt like.
And the most meaningful part?
You’re in them too.

If you’re looking for a family photographer in Northwest Indiana or the Chicago area, we’d love to connect.
We keep sessions simple, relaxed, and real. No pressure on you or your kids. Just your family, as you are.
